Following their 9-year-old daughter's verbal assault at a track and field competition on Thursday at Kelowna's Apple Bowl, two mothers in Kelowna are speaking out.

The mothers, who have chosen to remain anonymous, claim that their daughter was engaged in a shot-put competition when another competitor's grandfather began cursing at her.

'Hey, this is meant to be a girls' event, and why are you allowing boys compete,' a student's grandfather questioned as she prepared to step up to compete for the grade four shot-put final. My daughter uses the pronouns she/her and is cisgender; she was born female. She has a pixie cut," her mother Heidi Starr remarked.

After that, according to Starr, the man demanded documentation to show that her daughter was born female.

He put an end to everything. He also pointed at an other young woman with short hair. "Well, if she is not a boy, then she is obviously trans," he then said.

Starr claimed that at that point, the man's wife began referring to her as "a genital mutilator, a groomer, and a paedophile."

Kevin Kaardal, the superintendent of the Central Okanagan School District, stated to Castanet that measures are being taken to bar the individual from all activities connected with the school.

"The shot-put was actually moved away from him by staff after they interfered. The individual was not a student in our school system. We are taking action to make sure he can never again visit our school premises or attend events.

The act, according to Kaardal, was "totally unacceptable."

"Adults need to govern themselves and behave appropriately," he continued.

The girl's other mother, Kari Starr, claims that the events of Thursday have shaken their daughter's self-confidence.

""This has ruined the self-confidence of our lovely daughter, who cried uncontrollably throughout the entire event and even as we were leaving. Not to mention, she was distracted and unable to focus on her qualifying shot-put throw and track and field finals, Kari added.

The man's identification has not been verified by the school system, so Castanet is not publishing the information that the parents posted on local Facebook groups with the man's photo and name attached.
