Sinaloa Cartel Leader Arrested

Sinaloa Cartel Leader Arrested

According to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, two individuals were taken into custody on Thursday in El Paso, Texas: the son of the Sinaloa Cartel's leader, Joaquín "El Chapo," who is currently in jail, and a co-founder who assisted in running the cartel for thirty years.

In relation to the Mexican criminal organization, Joaquín Guzmán Lopez and co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia are facing "multiple charges," including "its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks," according to a statement from Garland.

The notorious criminal "El Chapo" was apprehended in Mexico, extradited to the US, and is currently serving a life sentence plus 30 years that was imposed in New York in 2019.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration's 2024 National Drug Threat Assessment, the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels "are at the heart" of the synthetic drug epidemic in the United States, which includes methamphetamine and fentanyl.

"Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Justice Department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member, and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable," Garland stated in the statement.

Ovidio Guzmán Lopez, another son of "El Chapo," was reportedly a cartel boss and was apprehended in Mexico in January 2023. He has since been extradited to the United States to stand trial on drug and money laundering accusations. In September of that year, he entered a not guilty plea.

In 2018, a U.S. federal grand jury accused Joaquín and Ovidio Guzmán Lopez on allegations of conspiring to smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the country.

Joe Biden, the president, declared he will not run for office again. In response, Governor Gavin Newsom declared that Biden "will be remembered as one of the most influential and unselfish presidents in history." Later, Newsom supported Vice President Kamala Harris as the replacement candidate.

Governor Gavin Newsom has remained one of President Joe Biden's most ardent supporters as efforts to force the troubled politician out of the race intensify.

When Robert Costa of CBS News questioned Newsom last week about getting requests to enter the race to unseat Biden as the Democratic nominee, he replied that he often selects "delete, delete, delete, delete" from messages and emails.

In a brief tape made public by CBS News to promote the interview—which was ultimately canceled due to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Saturday—Newsom declared, "I'm all in, no daylight" with Biden.

While this is not a novel statement from Newsom, it does highlight how, in the disarray that followed the president's June 27 debate fiasco, the governor has become possibly Biden's most formidable surrogate. More elected officials than any other Democrat in the nation, including other rising younger politicians who might challenge Biden in a future presidential contest, have linked themselves to the president more than Newsom has, as more and more of them are calling for Biden to decline his party's nomination for a second term.

According to political experts who spoke with CalMatters, Newsom is taking a wise stance because, even in the unlikely event that Biden withdraws or loses in November, he will still gain by being regarded as a team member. Newsom has cleverly elevated his personal profile by vigorously supporting the president, and if he decides to seek the Democratic nomination in the future, his allegiance to the party might help him gain favor with insiders who could support his campaign.

"Newsom aspires to be recognized as a devoted soldier. Democratic consultant Matt Rodriguez, who has worked on presidential campaigns for Bill Bradley, Barack Obama, and Dick Gephardt, said, "He doesn't have any other cards to play." "He's carrying out his necessary tasks."

A spokesperson for Newsom, who has publicly and repeatedly denied any interest in the presidency, said there is no strategy involved in his strong support for the Biden campaign. “Governor Newsom’s advocacy for the President and his administration reflects a recognition of all that President Biden has accomplished, Governor Newsom’s loyalty to the President and the Vice President, and a clear view of the real danger a second Trump administration would have for California and democracy in America,” Nathan Click said in a text message.
